Preventive Maintenance
1.
Inspection
Inspect the appearance of the battery; the
battery top and terminal connection shall
be kept clean and free from dust, corrosion,
and dry.
It indicates that there may be too much
water in the battery if there is liquid on the
top of the battery.
Inspect the connection between the battery
cable and other components, and tighten
all loose connections.
Replace the damaged cables.
Inspect whether all the vent caps have
been fixed on the battery properly.
2.
Cleaning
Clean the top, terminal and connections of the
battery with cloth or brush and mixed solution
of sodium bicarbonate and water. Do not let the
cleaning solution enter the battery.
Clean with water and wipe dry with cloth. Apply
a thin layer of petroleum jelly or use terminal
protector.
Keep the area around the battery clean and dry.
3.
Filling in Distilled Water
It is necessary to fill distilled water into the battery.
The filling frequency depends on the battery
applications and working temperature. It is necessary
to inspect the battery every few weeks to determine
the water filling frequency. Generally, the water filling
frequency will be larger if the battery is used longer.
It is necessary to charge the battery fully before
filling in distilled water. It is necessary only to
fill distilled water into the discharged or
partially charged battery if the plate electrode is
exposed; in this case, fill in the distilled water to
the level just above the plate electrode, and then
charge the battery; proceed to the following
water filling steps.
Take down the vent cap and upend to prevent
the dust being attached on the lower side of the
vent cap; inspect the electrolyte level height; if
the level height is much higher than the plate
electrode, it indicates that it is unnecessary to
fill in water; if the level height has not reached
the plate electrode, it is necessary to fill in
distilled water or deionized water.
With regard to standard battery, fill in water to
the position 3mm below the vent cap (the plastic
cap in the vent hole)
After filling in water, re-fix the vent cap on the
battery.
e.
Battery Charging
Proper charging is the prerequisite for maximizing the
battery performance. Insufficient or excessive
charging may shorten the service life of the battery
significantly. Most chargers are automatic and
pre-programmed but some chargers allow the user to
set the voltage and current values. The information
about proper charging is as follows:
The charge for this equipment is automatic and
pre-programmed so that the user does not need
to interfere the charging process.
It is necessary to charge the battery fully each
time after using.
The lead-acid battery does not have memory
effect. Thus, it is unnecessary to fully discharge
before re-charging.
Inspect the electrolyte level height and ensure
the positive and negative electrode plates not to
be flooded by the water before charging.
Before charging, inspect whether all the vent
caps have been fixed on the battery properly.
Charge the battery only in the well-ventilated
place.
The battery will discharge gas (bubble) at the
end of charging so as to ensure sufficient mixing
of electrolyte.
Avoid charging when the temperature is above
49
℃.
The figure below is the status diagram of battery
charging process.
