Control Unit IV Reference Manual
Troubleshooting
529-0004 Ver.3
6-3
Note for redundancy systems:
Before troubleshooting the FSK signal in a redundancy system, disconnect the RF out cable
on the unit that you want to test, and then disconnect the redundancy cable between the two
Control Units. This prevents erratic behavior during tests. Once you have resolved the
situation, you can reconnect the units and restart them. Make sure that the two units still
have the same setup.
If the FSK LED is off, use this procedure to determine whether an incorrect RF watchdog
setting, a faulty modulator or a faulty demodulator is causing the problem.
1. First, make sure that the Control Unit is cabled correctly as required by the RF watchdog
setting. For preset 238 (recommended for a single Control Unit) and preset 254
(recommended for redundancy systems), the
TEST OUT
port must be connected to the
TEST
IN
port with a short coaxial cable.
2. If you are troubleshooting one of the units in a redundancy system, disconnect the RF
output on the unit you are testing and then disconnect the redundancy cable between the
two units. If necessary, test the other unit once you have completed the following steps in
this procedure.
3. Check the RF watchdog settings. The RF watchdog must be enabled (see details on RF
watchdog presets in Chapter 3). To check the RF watchdog, log on to the Control Unit
and type
info
. The following example explains the information that appears on screen
when the RF watchdog preset is 238 (recommended setting for a single Control Unit). In
a redundancy system (code 254), a toggle should occur on error.
RF watchdog: OK
←
Watchdog is functioning (OK).
Version:2 Carrier: detected
←
FSK signal is present (detected).
Config: enabled, bit stream from RF
on TEST IN
←
Watchdog is enabled, with
TEST
OUT
connected to
TEST IN
(will read
RF IN
for certain settings).
On error, don't toggle the redundancy
circuitry and warn the CPU
←
No reset or switch on error (with
code 254, a toggle occurs).
4. If the RF watchdog is enabled and the Control Unit’s
TEST OUT
and
TEST IN
ports are
cabled correctly, but the
FSK
LED still is not lit, check the Control Unit’s internal
sequencer. First, set the RF watchdog to 142 in order to receive the signal from the
internal sequencer. The
FSK
LED should now be lit, which indicates that the sequencer is
working properly.
•
If the
FSK
LED is still off, then return the Control Unit to Electroline for repairs.
•
If the
FSK
LED is lit, continue troubleshooting the unit to test the modulator and
demodulator.
5. Connect a signal measuring device to the Control Unit’s
RF OUT
port to make sure the
FSK carrier is present. Use the procedure below and then refer to Table 6-2 to interpret
the results.
