Applying Power for the First Time
P/N 0013-1025-001 Rev F
Start-up Procedure with Tach (Velocity Mode)
1. Connect motor and tachometer wiring. Refer to “AC and DC Power Connections” on
2. Jumper FAC and RAC inputs to +15V (P1 pin 7).
3. Rotate all adjustments at least 16 turns CCW (to full CCW position).
4. Turn the TACH gain approximately 6 turns CW from full CCW position as a starting
point.
5. Turn the ILIM pot. approximately 3 turns CW from full CCW position.
6. Apply AC power.
The green LED should be ON, and all red LEDs should be OFF.
7. Jumper INHIBIT input (P1 pin 8) to +15V (P1 pin 7) to enable the drive.
8. Slowly turn ILIM CW until the motor is rotating slowly.
9. Adjust the BALance potentiometer CW until the motor shaft remains stationary.
10. Set the ILIM relative to motor peak current
a. 4 turns CW = approximately 50% peak current (with no external current limit resis-
tor)
b. 8 turns CW = approximately 70% peak current (with no external current limit resis-
tor)
c. 16 turns CW = 100% peak current (with no external current limit resistor)
The average current limit will always be 50% of the peak current limit.
11. Turn the COMP control CW until the motor shaft starts to oscillate, then turn back suffi-
ciently to stop the oscillation.
12. Remove power from the drive and use either of the following methods to apply a veloc-
ity command voltage signal to the drive:
a. Connect a potentiometer to the drive for CW/CCW remote VCS control as shown in
b. Connect a variable power supply that can supply up to 10 VDC to VCS+ (P1 pin 1)
and common (P1 pin 4).
c. If a function generator and oscilloscope is available, refer to page 3-4 for fine tuning
of the drive.
TIP
This procedure assumes the motor is
not connected to a load initially and a
controller interface is
not connected to the drive. During the procedure the motor
is connected to the load.
Intro
!
WARNING
If the motor accelerates toward full speed, switch off the AC power and reverse
the tachometer leads. Apply AC power again and the motor should be stationary
or rotating slowly.
TIP
There will be little holding torque on the motor shaft because the current limit
control (ILIM) potentiometer is only 3 turns CW.
