On Board Indicator LED’s

Each USC is equipped with LED’s (See
Figure 3) that are used for diagnosing status
without actually connecting to the USC or
network.  The LED’s are from left to right:

 •

Power LED: When illuminated power is

      present on  the board

 •

Command LED: When the USC is

     processing a command.

 •

Network LED: When illuminated the USC

is receiving, transmitting, or processing a
 command

 •

DI9 - DI12: When illuminated the relative

                       digital input is “On”

Networking Controllers

The strength of the Pow-R-Command 100
system is its ability to network a large number
of controllers with different functions, and
have all controller work together with other
systems.  The Pow-R-Command 100 network
is a buss network that communicates using
RS-485.  Typically, at the head of each
network is a Pow-R-Command 100 Network
Access Device which is used to provide user
access to all controllers attached to the
network.  In total there can be

120

individually addressed controllers

, not

including the Network Access Device, in a
Pow-R-Command 100 system.  The network
can extend up to

4,000-feet

from the Network

Access Devices to the furthest controller
away without the use of a signal repeater.
For more information on the Pow-R-
Command 100 network as well as Network
Access Devices see

Technical Document

TD1412014E

.

Locally Accessing A USC

On each USC is a four-pin connection used
to locally access a USC.  The most common
use for this port is to connect a Pocket PC,
which contains the proper software to access
the USC and network.  This can be a very
useful tool for maintenance and diagnostics.
For more information on Pocket PC’s see

Technical Document TD01412016E

.

Programming A USC

The USC must be programmed in order to
operate the switching devices under it’s
control, set schedules, and recognize inputs/
outputs attached to it.  Programming is
completed through a PC with the Pow-R-
Command 100 software installed.  For more
information on using PC’s with the Pow-R-
Command 100 network see

Technical

Document TD01412016E

.  For more

information on the types of Pow-R-Command
100 software, please refer to the Pow-R-
Command 100 Technical Library list at the
end of this document.

USC Control of Switching Devices

The USC is capable of operating two types of
switching devices, Smart Breakers and
Relays.

Smart Breakers are a uniquely designed
device offered by Eaton’s Cutler-Hammer.
Smart Breakers combine the thermo
magnetic protection of a standard branch
circuit breaker with a remotely controlled
switching capability. Smart Breakers are a
direct replacement for contactors and relays.
Since they are mounted in a panelboard as
any standard branch circuit breaker additional

structures for relays & contactors are
eliminated.  Smart Breakers are offered in
120V ac & 277V ac, bolt-on, single & double
pole, and up to 30A.  All Smart Breakers are
compliant with NEC regulations concerning
series rating of interrupting capacity.

All Smart Breakers regardless of model are
equipped with status feedback of the position
of the remotely controlled switch.  The GHBS,
GHQRS, & BABRS show status of the
primary contact as either “On” or “Off.”  When
using Smart Breakers with Pow-R-Command
100, this status indication can be seen
through software interfaces.

In addition to Smart Breakers, each USC has
the capability to switch relays.  When using
relays in a Pow-R-Command 100 network, a
Pow-R-command 100 Relay cabinet is used.

Memory Loss Protection

Each USC is equipped with on-board memory
loss protection of up to one year after power
failure.

Smart Breaker Selection

Located at the top left of the USC are three
metal prongs with a black factory jumper
installed across two.  These metal prongs are
used to configure the USC to work with either
BABR/GHBS or BABRS/GHQRS type Smart
Breakers.  The distinction is labeled on the
board by the prongs.  This is necessary due
to the fact that the BABRS & GHQRS status
reporting method is different then the BABR/
GHBS.
