AUTOROTATIONS
This is the most important manœuvre which it is essential to master completely
TRAINING EXERCISE:
(the complete engine shut down exercise must only be performed with the instructor)
- Establish a safe altitude (1000ft AGL – 300m AGL),
- Check safety below, both in front and on both sides,
- Lower the collective to bottom limit,
- Reach and maintain a speed of 100 to 110 km/h – 55 to 60 kts
- During descent, manage rotor RPM (if rotor speed too high, (use collective to bring the
needle of the rev counter to 100%, then return to bottom limit and repeat as necessary during
descent)
- At around 10/15m – 30/45 ft, commence flare by deliberate movement of the cyclic without
moving the collective
- Retain a non-skidding attitude as regards your anticipated impact point.
- On completing flare (at the precise moment that the tail starts sinking) flatten out, (
still in
non-skidding attitude
) and hold up the aircraft using the collective but without causing the
aircraft to climb.
- Accept that the progressive application of the collective results in a regular but slow loss of
altitude.
- Accept the lighting up of the low RPM warning light.
- Accept the sounding of the low RPM warning siren
- At around 30cm (1ft) from the ground (estimated height which can vary by +/- 20cm),
continue to apply the collective until contact established with the skids (
still in non-skidding
attitude)
- THE INERTIA OF THE ROTOR OF THE H2S MUST BE MAINTAINED.
- THE DESIRED SPEED DURING DESCENT AND AT THE MOMENT OF INITIATION OF
THE FLARE MUST BE ABOVE VPM AND CLOSE TO 100 km/h – 55 kts.
- IT IS THE FLARE WIHCH WILL TRANSFORM AT THE INSTANT (during the flare and until
its completion) YOUR SPEED INTO LIFT SO AS TO STOP THE FORWARD MOVEMENT
OF YOUR AIRCRAFT.
- STOPPING IN THIS WAY TAKES EFFECT AT A DISTANCE FROM THE GROUND
APPROXIMATELY EQUAL TO THE DIAMETRE OF THE ROTOR WITHOUT HAVING
« USED UP » REVS (i.e. without having acted on the collective)
- AS FROM THE END OF THE FLARE AND LEVELLING OUT ALL THE KINETIC ENERGY
THAT CAN BE DELIVERED BY THE ROTOR CAN BE USED TO COMPLETE THE FINAL
AND TO LAND GENTLY.
- NEVER HOLD THE AIRCRAFT UP USING THE COLLECTIVE PRIOR TO THE FLARE.
