Operation
Trim tanks
A tank functioning as a trim tank is assigned to priority group 0
and always operates before tanks in priority groups 1, 2, or 3.
The function of a trim tank is to be the first tank in a multi-tank
group to respond to system demand changes. Multi-tank groups
requiring a rapid response to changes in system demand typically
have an electric element humidifier with SSR control as the trim
tank.
Redundant tanks
The system capacity of a multi-tank group is the combined capacity
of tanks in groups 0, 1, and 2. A tank functioning as a redundant
tank is assigned to priority group 3 and operates only if one or
more of the tanks in groups 0, 1, or 2 is not available and the multi-
tank group cannot meet the demand for steam production. Placing
a tank in priority group 3 ensures that it only runs as a redundant
tank.
Because a redundant tank operates infrequently, assigning master
controller status to the redundant tank in a multi-tank group
reduces system down time while the master controller tank receives
servicing.
Tank wear leveling
The master controller monitors tank wear and assigns steam
production to tanks to equalize wear as much as possible within
the multi-tank group.
Fault tolerance
All tanks in a multi-tank group periodically send a status message
to all other tanks in the multi-tank group. If this message is not
received by the other tanks within a defined time period, the tank
is assumed to be unavailable to the remaining tanks in the group.
The newly unavailable tank will be taken off the list of available
tanks and the system will respond appropriately. If the unavailable
tank is the master controller, the remaining slaves will continue to
run for a short time at the level they were last told to run, and then
quit.

Priority groups
Vapor-logic4 assigns humidifiers a priority
group number. These numbers identify tank
function as follows:
0 = Trim tank
1 = Default tank configuration
3 = Redundant tank
Note that Priority Group 2 is currently
unassigned.
