AS/400 User Guide
Jobs
Execution of routines (called programs) on the AS/400 are referred to as jobs. There are two
types of jobs that run on the AS/400.
1.
Interactive - users enter data at a terminal and receive data back from the AS/400
2.
Batch - a function to be performed or a program to be run is put in line with other
programs or functions to be done “in the background”.
Users can perform other activities while another request is being executed. The AS/400 has
separate areas (subsystems) within the operating system where these activities are
performed. For example, interactive and batch jobs are run in the QINTER and QBATCH
subsystems, respectively.
Other subsystems may exist that are subsystems of either QINTER or QBATCH that handle the
processing of jobs. For example, the DMS D/E application has a subsystem named DMSDOC.
Jobs can be further classified as:
•
Submitted jobs are submitted and waiting for the AS/400 to allot time to start
processing
•
Active jobs are executing routines
There are two ways to check jobs to determine if they are running or waiting to be run:
•
