Check Polarity of Telephone Line

Check for polarity on the incoming telephone line to 
each 1812 board and maintain polarity throughout 
the telephone line to the homeowner’s phone. One 
potential problem checked when a malfunction 
occurs in a telephone entry system is to see if the 
telephone line has been wired to each board with 
the correct polarity.

Test Example: 1st 1812 board’s PHONE IN 
terminals #1 and #2. Terminal #2 must be positive 
(Tip +) with respect to terminal #1 (Ring -). Set a 
VOM meter to measure DC volts. Place the positive 
lead on terminal #2 and the negative lead on 
terminal #1. 

If the meter shows a positive voltage 

- OK

. If the meter shows a negative voltage (needle 

moves off scale to the left), reverse the wires on 
terminals #1 and #2.
