The Drive Module is an electronic motor
controller that converts AC line power input into
a variable AC waveform output. The frequency
and voltage of the output are regulated to
control the motor speed and torque. The adjus
frequency drive module can vary the speed of
the motor in response to system feedback such
as chilled water temperature. The adjustable
frequency drive module can also regulate the
motor by responding to remote commands from
external controllers.
The VTT series compressors use a drive module
with the following features:
• Drive Module offers both air and refrigerant
cooling with built-in redundancy for nearly all
operating conditions
• All voltage applications between 380V to 460V
are covered by a single drive module for a given
compressor model. A different drive module is
only needed for 575V systems
• Built-in DC inductors eliminate the need
for a line reactor
• Built-in fast-acting fuses
• Optional integrated EMI filters
The Drive Module is always cooled by air
and supplemental refrigerant cooling is only
used when the active thermal management
system indicates that it is needed to meet the
compressor’s power requirements. This dual
cooling provides some redundancy in nearly
all operating conditions. The active thermal
management system also ensures uniform
cooling and prevents condensation on the drive
module.
The Drive Module is also completely integrated
into the overall compressor control system
so that monitoring and diagnostics are all
performed at a central point.
