Configuration
Although ComSifter may be configured from any computer using Windows ME/2000/XP/Vista/7, MAC OS X, or
Linux as its operating system, the preferred arrangement is a Windows 2000/XP or newer, using Internet

Network
Network Type – 10/100/1000 Base-T
Number of Computers
ComSifter is not limited to a certain number of computers, but rather will be limited by the load presented by
the computers requesting connection to the Internet. ComSifter’s filtering service is able to filter a page in less
than five (5) milliseconds (ms), resulting in 200 requests per second. Up to 20,000 simultaneous HTTP
connections are supported. With typical user viewing patterns, this can translate to hundreds of computers
being connected to ComSifter at once.
Throughput
Raw throughput through ComSifter is greater than 250 Mbps when serving large files from the proxy cache.
Filtered throughput through ComSifter has been tested at over 105 Mbps using Comcast XFINITY® Extreme
105 Internet access. This figure may be reduced based on the number of concurrent connections, the size of
pages that are being filtered, and the number of Firewall Rules that have been implemented.
Typical Access Time
Access time per HTTP request is less than 5ms.
Caching Proxy
ComSifter incorporates a caching proxy that caches web pages that have been accessed and filtered.
Subsequent accesses to these pages are served from the caching proxy—not from the Internet. Access time
from the cache is near instantaneous, and depending on network usage patterns, may result in a substantial
reduction in Internet network traffic.
Note:
Websites that are coded to not cache (e.g. news sites like MSN) cannot be
cached by the ComSifter.
Blacklist Update and Bypass List Update
The Blacklist and Bypass List is updated automatically between 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. daily local time, or
weekly between 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Sundays, depending on the Service Contract. The update takes a
few seconds over a typical 1.5Mbps line.
