IP ONLY 

The network does not have domain controller. The ComSifter is not joined to a domain. When the user opens a 
browser/application the ComSifter authenticates the user, based on computer’s IP address. Everything is 
transparent to the user 

 

Practical Application 

Configuration 

  The school has 20 fixed computers, and an unknown number of smartphones and tablets. 

  The school wants a simple method of allowing users on the network. They do not care if the username is 

logged. 

  The administrator must setup the network based on IP addresses. For instance, staff/teacher computers are 

assigned a static IP. Those IP’s are mapped to the staff/teacher filter. Student computers are also assigned 
static IP’s, and are mapped to the student filter. Unknown computers, tablets, or smartphones will use DHCP. 
The range of addresses assigned by DHCP is mapped to a filter for unknown devices. 

Operation 

 

When a user opens a browser/application, the ComSifter looks at the IP, then redirects the user to the 
appropriate filter based on data entered in Users > User Management Utilities > Administer/Retrieve User 
IP's from ComSifter IP Database.

 

 

The operation is completely transparent to the end-user.

 

 

Method Pros and Cons 

Pros 

  The operation is completely transparent to the end-user. 

  Any computer can access the Internet as long as they have an entry in the ComSifter IP Database. 

  No software needs to be installed on client computers. 

  This method is a single stage transaction. No extra load is placed on the network. 

Cons 

  Only the computer IP is shown in the ComSifter Access Log. 

  This method may be trivial to spoof; a user with administrative rights can change the IP address of the 

computer to try to match the rules in the ComSifter IP Database.
