Molding
Molding installation requires advanced, experienced carpentry skills.
Here are a few tips to ensure your shelving and towers are prepped
properly for a snug fit with molding:
• Complete your closet installation before adding molding.
• Do not use H-Channels in design if adding crown molding. Cut top
shelving in corners for a tight fit – no gaps. Fasten mending plates
with #6 x 5/8 in. Flat Head Screws to secure any corner top shelves
to adjacent top shelving sections.
• Most crown molding, base molding, and quarter round installations
will only require 90° standard cross cuts and 45° angle cuts to finish
molding (as in overhead view,
FIG. 1
). In rare instances, with angles
or curved wall installation, 22.5° angles or other angles to match
unusual closet configurations may be needed.
(FIG. 2)
• It is essential that your miter saw blade is maintained in excellent
condition to prevent or reduce chipping or ragged edges on
these cuts.
• Measure twice, cut once. Measure twice again, cut once.
• Angle joints are pre-assembled, before mounting the pieces to the
towers and shelves, using hot melt glue. The glue dries quickly, so
it’s important to test the fit in place and have your pieces ready to
set together.
• Carefully plan the number of cuts and the number of pieces
required for any given closet design with crown molding and base
molding with or without quarter round. You must consider a minor
waste factor for lengths you cannot use, and you must consider
seaming (discussed later in these instructions) on any molding
lengths of approximately 8 feet or longer.
• Bottom cleats are not necessary when using base molding.
