10. Water Quality
1. These three products will be needed regularly (can be bought at Clas Ohlson):
a) Equipment to check the chlorine and pH level.
b) Chlorine tablets to disinfect the water.
c) Liquid Chlorine dispenser.
These products might be needed (can be bought at pool specialist shops and at most
paint retailers.
d) Chemicals to adjust the pH level.
e) Algicide to kill pool algae.
f) Shock chlorine to break down the combination of chlorine, ammonia, nitrogen and
organic components.
g) A net to remove rubbish such as leaves and insects.
It is extremely important that you follow the instructions on the pool chemical packet.
If you are not sure, ask the staff at the shop where you bought the chemicals. A high
concentration of chlorine and a low pH level will damage your pool.
2. Cleaning the bottom of the pool could be carried out using a water vacuum cleaner
connected to a garden hose.
3. Wash your legs and feet before getting into the pool, it will keep the bottom cleaner.
4. Ask the local water authority to find out the ”hardness” of your water. Hard or
calcium-rich water can decrease the effectiveness of the pool filter and thus the
water quality.
5. NOTE! It is very important that you check the pH level and chlorine level of the pool
every day. THE PUMP AND FILTER ALONE CAN NOT HINDER THE SPREAD OF
ALGAE IN THE POOL.
a) The pH level should be 7.3 – 7.8
b) The chlorine level should be 1.0 – 1.6 ppm (parts per million)
c) Add shock chlorine to your pool at least once a week
In warm weather when the pool is used more often, the higher values for both the pH
level and the chlorine level should be used. If you use an UV cover and a pool cover you
can adjust your recommended pH and chlorine levels accordingly. Water evaporation is
also decreased.
