11. Key to Pool Chemicals
Algae
Water plant that forms a slimy green film on the pool material.
Algicide
Chemical that prevents the build up of algae.
Alkaline agent
Liquid with an alkaline substance that increases the pH level to
over 7.0.
Chlorine
Liquid disinfectant. The most common pool cleaning agent.
Chlorine Dosage
The recommended amount of chlorine for cleaning the pool.
Chlorine Tester
Shows the level of chlorine in the pool. The level is shown in
ppm (parts per million)
Hard Water
Water with a high calcium, iron or magnesium content. Hard
water leaves deposits on the pool steps, filter, e.g. and is
therefore not ideal for pools.
Iron
Discolour the pool water. This can happen before the chemical
level of the water has balanced.
Manganese
Has a similar affect as iron and can discolour the water.
OTO
Measures the chlorine level by colouring a water sample various
shades of yellow and orange on a scale depending on the level
of chlorine.
Parts per million
Shortened to ppm, indicates the concentration of a chemical in
the water.
pH
The unit of measurement indicating the water’s acidity or
alkalinity. The pH level of neutral liquids is 7.0. If the pH level
is lower than 7, the liquid is acidic. If the pH level is higher, the
liquid is alkaline.
Phenol Red
Measures the pH level of the water.
Natron
Chemicals that increase the pH level of the water.
Shock treatment
A high dose of chlorine to destroy algae and bacteria.
