RADIUS
Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS) protocol that authenticates dial-in users
and authorizes their access to the requested device or service. This type of authentication
provides added security, ensuring that only the authenticated administrator can access the LE-
4xx SCS for management configuration. Having a central location facilitates usage/billing
tracking and network statistics gathering.
Four-Group RMON
The LE-4xx SCS uses four-group RMON for management. These four groups include:
Statistics
— provides performance information, packet size distribution, and error reports.
History
— short term and long term statistics. History statistics can be configured by the user to
collect various statistics at user-definable intervals. These statistics can then be used to monitor
network performance.
Events
— user-configured parameters that allow thresholds to be set that trigger alarms based
on current statistics.
Alarms
— parameters in statistics can be configured to trigger alarms. Alarms, in turn, can
trigger SNMP traps or other elements.
VLAN Management
Provisioning and maintaining VLANs is fast and easy using the Device Manager. Each VLAN is
established with its own traffic rate and billing information to ensure that services are delivered
without noticeable jitter or delay. Valuable usage statistics are also collected. VLANs are
identified using 802.1Q tags.
As needed, each VLAN can carry multiple services or one single service. As a subscriber signs up
for a service, a VLAN is provisioned for the subscriber. Each service is carefully delivered to the
end device (set top box, PC, IP phone, etc.) complete with management functionality,
priorities, and counters. Packets from multiple service providers can be delivered to the same
subscriber without mixing traffic or complicated access control mechanisms. VLANs provide
security among neighbors of the same service or different services, as each subscriber can be
configured with a private VLAN to the service provider.
Prioritization
QoS entries can be created that give certain traffic a greater or lesser priority than it would
otherwise receive. Traffic can be classified based on the port a frame is received on and the
VLAN ID tag included in the frame, as well as the intended egress port. If a frame does not
