PC6 Particle Counter
3.1.1
General Information
The PC6 Particle Counter sensor is intended for the determination of particle count and size distribution,
as well as volumetric ppb readout of insoluble material of greater than 2 micron in size. The sensor is
designed to detect particles in the 2 to 750
µ
m range (upper limit defined by flow cell size), and size
particles in the 2 to 127
µ
m range (any particles larger than 127 micron will be sized as >127
µ
m and
added to the total counts value). The PC6 Particle Counter sensor uses a light blockage method to
determine particle size and count. The light source is a 780nm infrared laser diode. The calculated
ppb readout is based on the particle size and assumes all detected particles are spherical, which is
obviously not going to be the case for most particulate. The PC6 Particle Counter is also not measuring
submicron particles.
With many typical particle distributions, a bulk of the particle volume is attributed to parti-
cles larger than 2 micron. Due to these considerations, the actual ppb value may differ from
the PC6 Particle Counter reported value.
The sensor features an entirely external sampling and measurement system which prevents a
sample leak from damaging sensitive electronic components. The 750 x 750
µ
m flow cell is easy to
access and clean. The constant head flow control weir ensures stable, reproducible flow and accurate
particle counts. The PC6 Particle Counter connects over a RS485 connection to the HydroAct 4 which
allows the user to see the individual size ranges and particle counts in multiple size ranges. The
HydroAct 4 controller provides an indication of the sensor’s cleanliness and allows the user to know
when cleaning is necessary. Another unique feature of the PC6 Particle Counter is its ability to perform
Automatic Sizing Calibration via the HydroAct 4 user menu. No software or computer is required to
calibrate the PC6 Particle Counter sensor.
