3.1 PC6 Particle Counter 37
The amount of light blocked from the detector is the sum of the light absorbed by the particle and
the light scattered or reflected by the particle. The size, composition, color, refractive index, light
scattering coefficient, etc of each particle will determine how much light is scattered and how much is
absorbed. The orientation of the particle as it passes through the light beam will also affect how much
light is blocked. These factors need to be taken into consideration when determining how data from
the particle counter should be interpreted. It is important to keep in mind that there are no absolutes
with any type of optical measurement that is done with light scatter or light blocking techniques. With
that said, having size data which is relatively indicative of the actual particle sizes in the sample is very
useful in categorizing the performance of a filter or determining how much relative volume of particulate
contamination exist in a given sample. The sensor output is fed into the counter electronics where the
particles are counted and sorted into size channels according to their pulse amplitude. These pulses
are compared to a calibration curve that was generated using PSL Spheres and this is how the size of
the particles is determined.

Keep the packaging for the sensor. In case of repair or warranty return the sensor in this package.
