1. About Wintersense SDI-12
Wintersense™ SDI-12 is an easy-to-deploy, non-invasive sensor for road temperature
monitoring. This compact and light weight sensor is designed for mounting on existing roadside
structures such as streetlight columns or RWIS towers. It has a cabled connection for power and
communications with an RWIS station or data logger for data storage and forwarding.
NOTE:
The Wintersense SDI-12 is compatible with all data loggers that support SDI-12
communications. This manual focuses on Campbell Scientific data loggers.

Use
caution
when
working
near
roadways
and
moving
vehicles.
Coordinate
with
local
traffic
authorities
and
use
appropriate
traffic
control
measures.

Although
the
Wintersense SDI-12
is
rugged,
it
should
be
handled
as
a
precision
instrument.
l
Do
not
use
cable
lengths
greater
than
60
m
(200
ft).
l
The
black
outer
jacket
of
the
cable
is
Santoprene®
rubber.
This
compound
was
chosen
for
its
resistance
to
temperature
extremes,
moisture,
and
ultraviolet
(UV)
degradation.
However,
this
jacket
will
support
combustion
in
air.
It
is
rated
as
slow
burning
when
tested
according
to
U.L.
94
H.B.
and
will
pass
FMVSS302.
Local
fire
codes
may
preclude
its
use
inside
buildings.

IMPORTANT:
Maintain
a
level
of
calibration
appropriate
to
the
application.
Campbell
Scientific
recommends
factory
recalibration
of
the
Wintersense SDI-12
every
1
year
when
installed
within
100
km
of
a
coast,
otherwise
every

years.
