The recommended installation angle of a Wintersense SDI-12 sensor is 30 to 60° (from vertical).
The following figure shows it at 45° from vertical.
Wintersense SDI-12 smart sensors contain a thermopile sensor which detects the presence of
thermal radiation emitted from the target surface. With non-contact infrared thermopile sensors,
the greater the installation angle of the sensor from vertical, the greater the risk of sensing
reflected radiation from other sources (such as long-wave infrared or reflected sunlight), which
can affect sensor accuracy. The Wintersense SDI-12 unit contains an integrated optical filter
(long-wave pass) that cuts off the visible and near-infrared radiant flux to provide optimum
ambient and sunlight immunity. The wavelength pass band of this optical filter is from 5.5 to 14
