Shift Rod Bushing Service
Removal
Use the following tools to remove the shift rod
bushing:
•
Puller plate from Puller Tool, P/N 358520
•
2 washers from Universal Puller, P/N 378103
•
Threaded rod, 5/16 or 1/4 in diameter x 15 in
long (8 or 6 mm diameter x 380 mm long)
•
2 nuts to fit threaded rod
•
2 fender washers to fit threaded rod
Assemble the threaded rod and tools as follows:
1. Insert the threaded rod into the shift rod bush-
ing.
2. Place 1 washer from universal puller on to the
rod, then install 1 nut on the rod.
3. Place the puller plate over the threaded rod.
Next, place 2 fender washers and 1 washer
from universal puller on the rod. Then install
the nut.
4. Align the plate across the top of the gearcase
so the threaded rod pulls the bushing straight,
as the nut is tightened.
5. Tighten the nut with a wrench until the bushing
is removed from the bore of the gearcase
housing.
Use a pick to remove the inner and outer o-rings
from the shift rod bushing.
Installation
Install new inner and outer o-rings on the bushing.
Use Shift Rod Bushing Installer, P/N 358997, to
install the bushing into the gearcase housing.
Apply Triple Guard grease to the tip of the tool.
Insert the tool through the shift rod bushing.
Apply Gasket Sealing Compound to the outer o-
ring. Then align the bushing in the gearcase hous-
ing.
Use a hammer to drive the bushing into the gear-
case. The top of the bushing should be flush to
