GasFinderMC Operation Manual — Maintenance
July 17th 2017
Retrorefl ectors
The Retrorefl ectors have no moving parts and the only maintenance required
is to clean the windows. The windows are usually Lexan which is a soft
plastic and great care must be used when cleaning to avoid scratches.
The need for cleaning will be indicated by a consistent loss of light, which may
result in poor gas-concentration readings. Diffi culty in obtaining an adequate
light level may indicate that the Remote Head or Duct Probe has moved out
of alignment and should be checked fi rst.
Note:
The instrument relies on a clear optical path to obtain readings of gas
concentration. Dust settling on the window of the Retro enclosure must be cleaned off
whenever it degrades the system’s performance. The average value for the light level
should be kept at the recommended values as determined at the initial installation. It
is diffi cult to clean the windows without scratching them and should only be done if
adequate light levels can not be obtained by re-alignment.
Many dusts, especially aluminium oxide, are very abrasive, and care must be taken not to
scratch the windows when cleaning them. The recommended procedure for cleaning is as
follows:
Blow off any dust using canned compressed air
•
A
. Note that compressed “shop” air may
contain oil from the compressor, and should not be used without a fi lter or oil trap.
If the window is streaked with rain-deposited particles, wash the window with large
•
amounts of water, using a spray bottle, (laboratory or other type) and clean fi ngers.
Gently wipe with a soft tissue.
•
Spray a small quantity of anti-static
•
B
solution on the window.
Gently wipe clean with a dry, soft tissue.
•
Light Level History
The light level history is a good indicator of the condition of the equipment and forecasting a
time for cleaning. Cleaning intervals may vary from once per week to once per year depending
on environmental conditions.
The history can determine whether the light loss is gradual or intermittent.
A gradual decrease may indicate that dirt is building up on the windows.
•
A sudden drop may indicate a local fog, obstruction of the path, a break in a cable or a
•
misalignment problem.
A diurnal variation will indicate movement of the Remote Head mounting structure due
•
to solar heating. See page 7.7.
A
Cans of compressed air are available from camera shops and electronic stores.
B
A suitable anti-static solution is “Novus
™
No.1”, used by plastic fabricators and it can be obtained directly
from Boreal Laser Inc.
