Towing with a rigid bar:
The towing eyes of both vehicles
should be on the same side.
If the towbar has to run at an angle,
note the following:
d
Clearance may be restricted when
turning corners.
d
If the towbar runs at an angle, lat-
eral forces will be generated (these
may be critical on a slippery sur-
face).
d
To compensate for towbar angular-
ity, the two vehicles cannot always
be driven one directly behind the
other.
d
If the towing vehicle's brakes are
applied, the other vehicle may
overrun it or skid sideways.
a
The towed vehicle should not be
heavier than the towing vehicle.
c
Cars with catalytic converter should
only be tow-started if the engine is
cold. It is always preferable to use
jumper leads from another car or a
separate battery to start the car.
1
Switch on the hazard warning
flashers (comply with national reg-
ulations regarding their use).
2
Turn the ignition key to position 2.
3
Select third gear.
4
Keep the clutch pedal down. When
the car is moving, gradually
release the clutch pedal. When the
engine has fired and is running,
depress the clutch pedal again.
5
Switch off the hazard warning
flashers.
Have the cause of the starting prob-
lem traced and rectified by BMW
Service.
Cars with automatic transmis-
sion
These cars cannot be tow-started.
For starting with a flat battery, see
next page.
1
Turn the ignition key to position 1
so that the brake lights, turn indi-
cators, horn and wipers can be
operated.
2
Switch on the hazard warning
flashers (comply with national reg-
ulations regarding their use).
If the car's electrical system has
failed, display a warning notice to the
rear or place the warning triangle in
the rear window.
b
Please make sure that the igni-
tion key is turned to position 1 even if
the electrical system has failed, to
prevent the steering from locking.
