CHAPTER 3: Introduction
3.2 Key Features
The Rackmount ServSwitch Brand CAT5 KVM and KVM/Serial Extenders have a
number of useful features which contribute to the transparent remote operation of
your PCs. Some of the more important ones are:
• Distance up to 50 m (160 ft.) with Micro Remotes or 300 m (985 ft.) with other
types of Remotes
Operate your PCs from almost anywhere in the same building.
•
Fully adjustable video equalization
Compensates for the loss of image quality caused by the signals passing
through such a long run of cable.
•
Fully buffered signals
Remote operation of the PCs is consistently smooth and transparent.
• Local Hubs are self-powered
Each of a Local Hub’s CPU ports is powered by the keyboard and mouse ports
of the attached PC—external power supplies aren’t normally needed
(although we recommend that you use one with the ACU1006VRA). Refer to
the paragraphs between steps 3 and 4A in
Section 6.3 .
• Local Hubs’ CPU ports are electrically isolated
Each of a Local Hub’s CPU ports is on a separate circuit from the others. If
you have a mild electrical problem on one port, it shouldn’t affect the others.
• Intelligent PS/2 keyboard and mouse emulation
With this, the PCs boot and operate correctly under most circumstances, and
you can freely detach and reconnect the keyboards and mice as necessary (the
Rackmount Extender automatically initializes the keyboards and mice as soon
as it detects that you’ve reattached them).
• Microsoft ® IntelliMouse™ compatibility
Use this and compatible “wheel mice” with confidence. In a Dual-Access
system, you can even use a standard PS/2 mouse at one of a PC’s user stations
and an IntelliMouse at the other.
•
Ready for rackmounting
Local Hubs fit comfortably in just 1U or 2U of vertical space in standard
19" racks. Remote Hubs come with included rackmount brackets. And if you’d
like to rackmount any of your non-Micro Remote Units, we offer a separate
rackmount kit (product code RMK19U-R2) for them as well. See
Appendix B .
