Appendix 1: General information on CD-RW and DVD+RW

D V D + R W
CD-RW
CD-RW is short for C ompact D isc R e W ritable.
It is an optical disc that enables you to write onto it in multiple sessions. Its
storage capacity is about 650 to 700 Mb.
Its dimensions are standard: 12 cm in diameter and 1.2 mm thick. It has a
15 mm hole in the center.
Note: For archiving operations (see Archiving database backups on page 6-11), the
CD-RW must be formatted.
DVD+ RW
DVD+RW is short for D igital V ersatil D isk R e W ritable and the + indicates the
format of the DVD.
Data on a DVD+RW can be erased and recorded over numerous times without
damaging the medium. It is an optical disc with a storage capacity of about
4.7 Gb.
Its dimensions are identical to those of a CD-RW.
Note: Like a CD-RW, a DVD+RW must be formatted before you perform archiving
operations.
It is important to use the DVD
+ RW correctly. Do not use DVD - RW or DVD-RAM.
