In this example the client PC needs to send information to a
non-PPTP enabled host on a remote LAN. The client PC might
also have a non-compliant, internally issued IP address which is
not compatible with the Internet.
PPP is the protocol used to send information to the remote LAN,
but it is not possible to send PPP on a local Ethernet LAN. In this
instance, the client PC wraps its PPP data in PPTP which is then
sent across the Ethernet LAN to Nautica 4000 A. Included with
the call setup is the ISDN number of Nautica 4000 B. Nautica
4000 A strips away the PPTP information and then sends a PPP
packet to Nautica 4000 B.
Nautica 4000 B accepts the incoming call and supplies a
compliant IP address to the client PC for passing its packets
across the Internet to the host device. Nautica 4000 B could, in
this case, be a DHCP server.
