Chapter 16
WINS Options
Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS) is a facility for
resolving the NetBIOS names used in Microsoft networking to
their associated IP addresses.
The Nautica implementation of WINS provides a local static
mapping of NetBIOS names to IP addresses. These may be
learned by the router either dynamically from the local Ethernet,
across WAN links, or added statically to the unit.
To use the WINS server you must point your PC’s NetBIOS
Name server’s address at the Nautica router. This can be done
using DHCP or by using the Network Properties in the Windows
95 Control Panel.
The WINS server responds to queries for any address that it
knows. If an unknown name is asked for it requests that name
from the LAN by a broadcast or from the address configured in
the WINS address in the LAN01 path.
If the LAN query fails, the router requests the name using any
path that is up if the Use If Up parameter is set (Chapter 7).
