ETWORKS

To confirm that basic operation is correct, make a manual call and attempt
to connect to a server. If this fails, then there is a general network problem,
as at this stage the two networks are transparently joined together.

IPX connections are established by first requesting a server with the Service
Advertising Protocol (SAP), then requesting its location with the Routing
Information Protocol (RIP). When all the details about the server are
known, an ‘attach’ process is initiated by the Netware Core Protocol (NCP).
When a Novell workstation is attached to a server, the login process can
then begin.

The first step in faultfinding is to ensure that the local bridge is configured
to respond to ‘Get Nearest Server’ requests if necessary. Next, the relevant
autocalls (see R

EFERENCE

chapter) should be learned for the correct Novell

‘external’ network number and Ethernet frame type for the segment to
which it is attached.

If the local bridge configuration appears correct, then the next step is to
make sure that the link between the two bridges is established when the
workstation requests an attach to the remote server. Problems in this area
can be caused by: the link not being set up due to ISDN call establishment
problems; external network numbers or frame types different at both ends of
the link; the network connection is excluded by type or address filtering,
etc.
