Assume that none of the stations on the network is active.
1.
Now, if Host X wants to send data to Workstation A, it puts a frame
containing the data on LAN A.
2.
Bridges 1 and 2 read the frame, note the fact that Host X is on their
local network (LAN A), and (not knowing where Workstation A is)
forward the frame on their respective links: bridge 1 sends the frame
to bridge 3; bridge 2 sends it to bridge 6.
3.
Bridge 3 reads the frame from the link, records the fact that Host X is
reached via its link and sends the frame to LAN B.
4.
Bridge 4 reads the frame from LAN B, notes that Host X is reached
via its LAN interface, and sends the frame to bridge 5.
5.
Bridges 5 and 6 read the frame off their own links, record the fact that
Host X can be reached via those links, and send the frame to LAN C.
6.
So Workstation A reads TWO identical frames for it from Host X.
The next step is even more important…
7.
Bridge 6 reads the frame placed on LAN C by bridge 5, and vice
versa. Both bridges (still not knowing where Workstation A is
located, as it has transmitted nothing yet) note that Host X is now on
LAN C, and send the frame on their links to bridges 2 and 4
respectively.
As this example shows, the network is unstable, as a loop exists which
causes all bridges to change their routing tables in error. The network
comes to a halt as all frames are duplicated and station locations continually
changed.
Network looping can occur with either local or remote bridges as shown in
Figure 2-6 below. Remote bridge pairs 1 and 3 and 4 and 5 in Figure 2-5
are replaced here by local bridges 1 and 3, but the connection paths are the
same.
