UTOCALLS

Operation

Allows ISDN-only connected IPX network devices to
communicate. This is most useful for remote client
workstations wanting access to central site LAN-based
servers on a part-time basis, but any IPX-based server
networks can be linked in this way.

The Marlin Bridges act as Novell server or router "agents"
which broadcast routing and service information from the
routers and servers accessed using ISDN connections. The
ISDN line will be set up again only when actual data is to
be sent between these devices and workstations.

Also, Marlin Bridges respond to server "keep alive" polls
instead of the workstations, so allowing the ISDN
connections to be closed when no "real" data is being sent.

Installation

Autocall table setup is made much shorter and simpler by

first setting up manual ISDN calls between remote client
site(s) and the central server site(s) and/or between server
sites. This allows the Marlin Bridges to learn the locations
of servers and routers on the network: see R

EFERENCE

chapter, section 5.5.4.2 ISDN Automatic Call Addresses.

Unasked-for information from servers can be used to start
an ISDN connection to a remote workstation by setting up
the workstation address in the server's local Marlin Bridge.
On the Marlin Bridge local to the server, set up an ISDN
Autocall table entry of type IPX_WS (Workstation) with the
MAC workstation address. Repeat for each workstation.

Optimisation

The Marlin Bridge can be set up to respond to "get nearest
server" requests from a client workstation in place of a
remote ISDN connected server (put a “!” in front of
appropriate IPX_SAP entry): see R
