Loading New Firmware into The ALD-D48
As new features are implemented on the ALD-D48 device server it may be desirable to implement
those new features in the field. To accomplish this the ALD-D48 device server has the capability to
accept a new program via the ethernet port. This is accomplished with a protocol known as TFTP
(Trivial File Transfer Protocol).
TFTP is a standard (RFC 1350), simple TCP/IP-based protocol designed for non-interactive file
transfers. It is primarily used to upgrade or configure network devices. TFTP is not the same as the
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) that you may be more familiar with.
Two pieces are required to perform a TFTP file transfer: a TFTP server and a TFTP client. The
ALD-D48 device server has a TFTP server built into it. It is always listening for a connection to
receive new programming but a TFTP client must connect and transfer a new program. There are
several freeware and shareware TFTP clients available for download on the internet. A good one is
part of the TFTP Server Pro software package available from Walusoft out the United Kingdom.
You must know the IP address of the ALD-D48 device server, the filename of the new program to
be loaded, and the filename on the device server where the program will be stored to TFTP a
program.
If the ALD-D48 device server has a static IP address you may already know it's address. If it is
getting its address via a DHCP server you may not know what address is assigned. Either way you
can determine the address by connecting to the serial port of the ALD-D48 device server
(9600, N, 8, 1), resetting it, and entering the configuration menu by pressing Enter. Option 1
(Display Current Settings) will display the current IP address of the device.
The filename of the new program to be loaded is the name of the file to be transferred. This is the
file you received from AMX or downloaded from the AMX website. A typical filename might be
ALD_D48_v017.ROM, where v017 is for version 1.7 of the firmware.
The filename on the device server is always 3Q.
A typical TFTP session using the TFTP client from Walusoft is shown below.
