Configuring The ALD-D48 Device Server
Each ALD-D48 device server can be configured on-site to suit the needs of the installation. To
configure the device server or to view it's settings a serial port is needed. Any terminal emulator can
be used (MS Windows HyperTerminal is a good example). The settings should be 9600 baud, 8
data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, no flow control. Connect to the SERIAL DB-9 configuration port
(see FIG. 3) in order to configure the ALD-48. Upon initialization you will have 5 seconds to select
Enter and configure the ALD-D48 (Shown in FIG. 4). Otherwise the ALD-D48 will default to
normal processing and begin looking for a master.
The following settings can be altered:
IP address . The device server ships configured for DHCP. It will automatically attempt
to get an IP address on power up. If it cannot find an IP address it will start up but it will
be unable to communicate with any other device. In other words, lights supported by this
ALD-D48 will be unavailable for external control. To dynamically get an IP address a
DHCP server must be present in the network. If no DHCP server is available or if a
specific IP address is desired the device server can be configured with a static IP address.
Subnet Mask . All devices communicating over Ethernet using IP need a subnet mask
assigned. This prevents them from having to process every IP data packet that comes
across the wire. Each network is unique so check to make sure the correct subnet mask is
used to improve system performance. The most common subnet mask is 255.255.255.0.
This allows all packets on the local subnet to be processed. Instead of entering the subnet
mask as an IP address value (255.255.255.0) the subnet mask is entered as the number of
bits to mask. 8 is the most common and is equivalent to 255.255.255.0. The configuration
screen will give you several of the most common used and their equivalent IP values. The
device server ships configured with a subnet mask of 8 bits (255.255.255.0).
IP address of Gateway . Sets the IP address of any network gateway. Unlike some
devices on the market if DHCP is enabled the gateway address is not automatically set by
the DHCP server. This setting must be done manually. If all devices are on the same
subnet this value has no relevance.
NetLinx Device Number . As a NetLinx device the ALD-D48 must have a unique
NetLinx device number to identify it on the network. There are two options: first,
specifying a device number of zero will cause the device to request a device number from
the NetLinx master. The master will then assign an unused device number to the device.
If anything other than zero is entered that will become the ALD-D48's new device
number once the settings are saved and the device reboots.
IP address of NetLinx Master . The device server can be configured to connect to the
first NetLinx master it finds, to connect directly to a master based on IP address, or to
connect to a master based on the master's system number. The device server ships
configured to connect to the first available NetLinx master.
