Heavy Duty Circuit Breakers
There is a heavy duty “Main” circuit breaker near each battery
switch. The breaker near the port battery switch provides
protection for the windlass and electronics main circuits
and the breaker near the starboard battery switch provides
protection for the main DC house circuit and DC accessories.
These circuit breakers are equipped with an indicator/reset
lever that indicates the status of the breaker. It is also used
to reset the breaker if it trips. When the breaker trips, the
indicator lever will point straight down. When the breaker is
reset and not tripped, the lever will be horizontal and hidden
within the breaker. A test button near the lever can be pressed
to test the breaker to ensure it is operating properly. The
heavy duty circuit breakers typically trip only when there is
a fault in the system. If a breaker trips, you should find and
correct the problem before resetting the breaker.
Heavy Duty, Main Fuse Blocks
There is a heavy duty, main fuse block for each battery bank
located in each bilge compartment at the main battery cable
to battery switch cable connection. The fuse blocks provide
protection for the main battery circuit to each battery switch.
If a main fuse block blows, it must be replaced with a fuse
block of the same rating as the original. The main fuse blocks
typically blow only when there is a fault in the system. If
a main fuse blows, you should find and correct the problem
before connecting a replacement fuse block.
Cabin DC Accessory Breaker Panel
Power is distributed to most of cabin 12-volt accessories
through individual circuit breakers located in the cabin DC
breaker panel. The breaker panel is located in the cabin wall
on the port side of the companionway. A main breaker located
in the panel protects the system from an overload. Some 12-
volt accessories are operated directly by the circuit breaker
in the panel while others are operated by switches fed by the
panel breakers.
A DC “Line Voltage” meter is located in the panel that
monitors the voltage level in the batteries. It will monitor the
voltage of the batteries plus any electrical charges supplied to
them when the engines or the battery charger are operating.
A selector switch in the panel allows you to test each battery
bank individually.
A DC “Load Current” meter is located in the panel that
indicates the total amperage or current being drawn through
the DC panel. It is the total current level of all of the 12-volt
equipment in operation at the time.
The following is a description of the accessories controlled
by the breakers in the Cabin DC breaker panel:
Battery Test Switch
A two position switch that is used to monitor the available DC
voltage and amperage in each battery bank individually.
Port Battery Switch and Heavy Duty Circuit Breaker
DC and AC Cabin Breaker Panels
Main
Supplies 12-volt current to the DC breaker panel and protects
the panel from an overload.
Cabin Lights Forward
Supplies 12-volt electrical current to the cabin light switches
for the galley and V-berth.
Cabin Lights Aft
Supplies 12-volt electrical current to the cabin light and fan
switches for the head compartment.
