2.3.2 Installing a CPU
The PPC-102's CPU (Central Processing Unit) can be upgraded to
improve system performance. The PPC-102 provides one 321-pin ZIF
(Zero Insertion Force) socket which is backward compatible with ZIF
socket 5 processors. The CPU must come with an attached heatsink to
prevent overheating; the PPC-102 includes one unit.
Warning! The CPU may be damaged if operated without a
heatsink.
Caution! When buying a CPU, do not include a fan and do not
apply thermal jelly to the CPU for fan installation. The
compact size of the PPC-102 prevents using a fan.
Warning! Always disconnect the power cord from your PPC-102
when you are working on it. Do not make connections
while the power is on as sensitive electronic compo-
nents can be damaged by the sudden rush of power.
Only experienced electronics personnel should open
the PPC-102.
1. Turn off the PPC-102 and remove the rear cover.
2. Locate the ZIF socket and open it by first pulling the lever sideways
away from the socket, then upwards to a 90-degree angle.
3. Insert the CPU in the correct orientation. The notched corner of the
CPU (with the white dot) should point towards the end of the lever.
The end of the lever is indicated as the blank area where one hole is
missing from the corner of the square array of pin holes, and an
arrowhead printed on the PCM-5865 board points to it.
4. Gently slide the CPU in. It should insert easily. If not, pull the lever
up a little more and make sure the pin of the CPU corresponds with
the hole of the socket. DO NOT USE EXCESSIVE FORCE!
5. Press the lever down. The plate will slide forward.
