Management

The DS3-PSM is used in conjunction with the Primary Controller Unit (PCU) to support both 
local and remote management. Operation Administration Maintenance and Provisioning 
(OAM&P) tasks can be performed through the Operating System (OS) interface on the PCU. 
Remote management via Total Access Element Management System (EMS) using Simple 
Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is supported through the PCU. Reporting and 
managing of Quality of Service (QoS) is also supported. The DS3-PSM also exercises synchro-
nized Performance Monitoring (PM) and provisioning between active and standby units.

APS

The DS3-PSM handles all Automatic Protection Switching (APS) switching decisions for all 
ESM devices on the Metallic Data Extension (MDE) bus chain. The following events trigger an 
APS event:

• DS3 error on the DS3-PSM (RLOS, TLOS)
• Loss of connectivity anywhere in the DS3-PSM to ESM to ESM chain
• Loss of power/equipment fault on any DS3-PSM or ESM
• Card reset on any DS3-PSM or ESM
• Operator request via menus, SNMP, or DS3-PSM front panel switches
