5.

Floppy Disk Interface

The floppy disk interface can support two drives. The drives may be 3.5" (720K or
1.44M), 5.25" (360K or 1.2M), or a mix of the two.

5.1

Connector

The floppy disk connector is a 34-pin, dual-in-line, male header designated J12.

The required cable connects to 5.25" floppy drives via a 34-pin female edge connector and
to 3.5" drives via a 34-pin socket connector. In a two drive system, the drives are
connected in a daisy chain fashion, one at the end of the cable and one in the middle. The
first drive, drive A, is always connected to the end connector. The middle connector is
used for the second drive, drive B. The daisy chain cable twists seven lines, 10 through
16, to correctly address the two floppies during operation (the twist is a "mirror" around
line 13, which remains stable). See Appendix A for ordering information.
