What to Do If a Test Fails
If the diagnostic tests fail, the NIC may not be defective.
The problem may be an incorrect setting of a NIC
configuration parameter that conflicts with the settings of
other NICs, or improper installation. Complete the
following checks to test the NIC further.
CAUTION:
Turn the power off and unplug the computer
before inserting or removing the NIC.
■
Make sure the NIC is seated correctly in the slot.
Check the NIC installation by reviewing the installation
instructions in Chapter 2.
■
Inspect all cables and connections.
Check for specific hardware problems, such as broken
traces or loose/broken solder connections. Swap with
known working parts.
■
Make sure that the PCI slot containing the NIC is
activated.
PCI computers allow PCI slots to be activated or
deactivated. This is done through the computer’s
CMOS utility, or in some cases, with a special PCI
utility. Refer to your computer documentation for
information about activating PCI slots.
■
Make sure that the PCI slot with the NIC in it is a bus
master slot.
Bus mastering is not supported on all PCI slots in all
computers. The 3C339 PCI NIC will work only in a bus
master slot. Refer to your computer documentation
to identify the bus mastering slots, or call the
computer manufacturer.
■
If you have installed the NIC correctly and you still
experience problems, check the software.
Make sure that you have installed the correct drivers
for the network operating system you are running
(refer to Chapter 3, “Network Driver Installation”).
