ROUBLESHOOTING
This chapter explains how to run diagnostic tests with the
3TLVDIAG diagnostic and configuration program and
what to do if a test fails.
3C339 PCI NIC diagnostics are not backward-compatible
with the 3Com TokenLink Velocity 3C319 ISA NIC or with
TokenLink III 3C6X9 ISA, EISA, MCA, or PC Card NICs.
About the Diagnostic Tests
The diagnostic tests discover problems such as hardware
conflicts or NIC faults, and they check the NIC’s overall
operation. The NIC must be connected to the network
to run the tests.
The following tests check the NIC’s physical components
and circuitry:
■
Adapter Register Test
■
EEPROM Checksum Test
■
Adapter Memory Test
The following tests check the NIC’s ability to transmit and
receive packets to and from the network:
■
Transmit in Wrap Mode Tests
■
Transmit in Insert Mode Tests
The tests may be run separately, in combination with
one another, or all together as a suite.
If the NIC passes all tests successfully, NIC hardware failure
is ruled out. If a problem still remains, look at cabling,
software, and other issues that affect functionality on the
network. For troubleshooting suggestions, see “What to
Do If a Test Fails” later in this chapter.
