G.SHDSL Port Setup
This chapter explains how to configure settings for profiles and individual DSL ports. It also
covers how to configure virtual channels and virtual channel profiles.
3.1 G.SHDSL Standards Overview
The G.SHDSL module supports both the Annex A and the Annex B power spectral density
regions with G.991.2.
Downstream refers to traffic going out from the line card to the subscriber’s G.SHDSL modem
or router. Upstream refers to traffic coming into the line card from the subscriber’s G.SHDSL
modem or router.
3.2 Profiles
A profile is a table that contains a list of pre-configured G.SHDSL settings. Each G.SHDSL
port has one (and only one) profile assigned to it at any given time. The profile defines the
maximum and minimum transfer rates and the Power Spectrum Distribution (PSD) Region of
all the G.SHDSL ports that have this profile. You can configure multiple profiles, including
profiles for troubleshooting.
Profiles allow you to configure G.SHDSL ports efficiently. You can configure all of the
G.SHDSL ports with the same profile by modifying the profile, thus removing the need to
configure the G.SHDSL ports one-by-one. You can also change an individual G.SHDSL port
by assigning it a different profile.
For example, you could set up different profiles for different kinds of accounts (for example,
economy, standard and premium). Assign the appropriate profile to a G.SHDSL port and it
takes care of the port’s maximum and minimum transfer rates. See later in this chapter for how
to configure profiles.
