WAN Screens

This chapter describes how to configure WAN settings. 

8.1  WAN Overview

• Use the 

Route

 screen to configure route priority for the ZyWALL. 

• Use the 

WAN

 screen to configure the WAN port for Internet access on the ZyWALL.

• Use the 

Traffic Redirect

 screen to configure an alternative gateway.

• Use the 

Dial Backup 

screen to configure the backup WAN dial-up connection.

8.2  TCP/IP Priority (Metric)

The metric represents the "cost of transmission". A router determines the best route for 
transmission by choosing a path with the lowest "cost". RIP routing uses hop count as the 
measurement of cost, with a minimum of "1" for directly connected networks. The number 
must be between "1" and "15"; a number greater than "15" means the link is down. The 
smaller the number, the lower the "cost".

The metric sets the priority for the ZyWALL's routes to the Internet. Each route must 
have a unique metric.

The priorities of the WAN port routes must always be higher than the dial-backup and 
traffic redirect route priorities.

If the WAN port route has a metric of "1" and the traffic-redirect route has a metric of "2" and 
dial-backup route has a metric of "3", then the WAN port route acts as the primary default 
route. If the WAN port route fails to connect to the Internet, the ZyWALL tries the traffic-
redirect route next. In the same manner, the ZyWALL uses the dial-backup route if the traffic-
redirect route also fails. 
The dial-backup or traffic redirect routes cannot take priority over the WAN routes.
