covers the lifting station (FIG. 10). 

Any loads on the system must be transferred to the concrete structure 

and must not weigh on the tank since it is not intended as a structural 

component but simply as a container for wastewater.

For specifications of the type of concrete to be used to construct the 

covering platform, consult a civil engineer or specialist technician.

17. Control system

The lifting station is controlled by a control panel which can be supplied 

with the system. 

The basic functions of this device are:

• 

Control of pump operation (start/stop) and of alternation cycles (for 

dual pump installations).

• 

Signalling of breakdowns by means of an alarm light/buzzer or a 

remote monitoring system.

The float switches are the standard level control system used with the 

control panel.

An ultrasound or piezoresistive probe level control system is available 

on request.

18. Float switches

The lifting station uses float switches to control the stop and start levels 

of the pumps installed.

Single lifting station

This uses 3 float switches: 

1. Stop float switch (set for the minimum level)

2. Start float switch (set for the maximum level)

3. Alarm float switch to prevent overflows (optional)

Double lifting station 

(FIG. 12)

:

This uses 4 float switches:

1.  Stop float switch (set for the minimum level)

2.  Pump 1 start float switch (set for the maximum level)

3.  Pump 2 start float switch (set for the maximum level)

4.  Alarm float switch to prevent overflows (optional)

At each start/stop cycle, the control panel reverses the operating order 

of the pumps installed (alternation cycle) to ensure that the work load 

is equally shared.

The float switches are pre-installed in the factory and are set for opti-

mal use of the lifting station. 

If special setups are required, the heights of the float switches can be 

varied to obtain different start and stop levels. 

However, users are advised to keep

19. Electrical connections

The connections between the pumps and float switches and the con-

trol panel must be made by qualified staff.

Refer to the wiring diagram supplied with the control panel.

 

20. Starting the pumping station

Once installation has been completed and the wiring has been che-

cked to ensure that it is correct, a test should be run to ensure that the 

lifting station is in perfect working order.

• 

Place enough water in the tank to ensure that the pump will not run 

dry;

• 

Close the outlet gate valve ALMOST COMPLETELY;

• 

Simulate operation of the system by operating the float valves by 

hand as described below:

Single lifting station:

• 

Raise the STOP float switch. (Nothing happens)

• 

Keeping the stop float switch raised, raise the START float switch. 

The pump must start.

• 

Lower the START float switch. (Nothing happens)

• 

Lower the STOP float switch. The pump stops.

Double lifting stations:

• 

Raise the STOP float switch. (Nothing happens)

• 

Keeping the stop float switch raised, raise the first START float 

switch. Pump 1 must start.

• 

Also keeping the first start float switch raised, raise the second 

START float switch. 

• 

Pump 2 must start.

• 

Lower the start float switches (nothing happens)

• 

Lower the stop float switch. The pumps stop.

Repeat the operation to check that the control panel reverses the star-

ting order of the pumps installed at each cycle.

This procedure must only be carried out for a few seconds, since 

prolonged operation with the outlet gate valve closed might da-

mage the motor.

21. Alarm float switch

To check operation of the level alarm float switch, simply raise this 

float switch to the START position to trigger the control panel alarm 

function. 

Lower the float switch to stop the alarm.

 22. General maintenance

It is important to inspect the lifting station often to guarantee trouble-

free operation and prevent too much residue from building up inside it.

The system must be started up at least once every 6 months. 

Generally, the pumps installed in a lifting station are connected so that 

they operate automatically and they may start up without warning. 

Therefore, make sure that the electrical and drainage system connec-

tions have been cut off before doing any work on the station.

If greasy materials have built up, pour detergent into the affected area 

and leave it to act for a while, then rinse. Repeat if necessary. 

This will assure that the float switches move freely. 

In areas with large amounts of grease, fit a suitable filter upstream of 

the lifting station.
