Most modern amplifiers today do not have the necessary circuitry built in to drive a turntable. As a
consequence a necessity arises to use a phono preamplifier. What this does is to boost the level and correct the
frequency response of the output from a moving magnet (MM) or moving coil (MC) cartridge. It will then be
compatible with standard line level inputs on the amplifier. Therefore the volume should be approximately the
same as other components in the system - i.e. CD player.
The PH100 caters for MM, low output MC and high output MC cartridges.
Do not connect MM and MC
cartridges at the same time as there will be a possibility with the high amplification factor that some noise could
occur at the output stage. You will note that the selector control on the front panel of the PH100 has only two
options (MM or MC) even though it accepts high output MC. The circuitry has been designed so that it will
automatically sense which type of moving coil cartridge is being used and settings will adjust accordingly
provided the correct selection is made from the toggle switch on the rear panel. A word of warning ...Always
switch off your PH100 before you connect or disconnect any cartridge. Large output signals can occur and are
best avoided. Always lower the volume when placing or lifting a stylus from an LP and always lower the volume
before you switch off your PH100.
USING YOUR HERITAGE PH100
First connect your PH100 to the power socket with the mains cable supplied. Using a good quality cable, and
selecting either the RCA or balanced output, connect the PH100 to the input of your integrated amplifier or
preamplifier. Ideally suited for use with YBA Heritage products, the PH100 can however be used with any pre or
integrated amplifier.
Connect your turntable to the PH100 via the input terminals on the rear panel choosing either MM or MC
depending on your choice of cartridge. Connect the tone arm shield cable directly to the chassis of the PH100
to eliminate any radio interference or hum from the signal. If using a moving coil cartridge, set the selector
switch on the rear panel to standard or high output.
Choose either MM or MC from the selector switch on the front panel.
YBA MANUFACTURES ITS OWN MC TRANSFORMER
Moving coils are known for their dynamic qualities, definition, wide bandwidth, coupled with great realism
of reproduction. These qualities are attributable to the same principle of operation of moving coils that
make them ideal generators. This explains their continued success with demanding users.
But their operation is very critical and depends mainly on the charging impedance and adapter, the
characteristics greatly influence the electrical behaviour of the cartridge and therefore the quality of the
sound reproduced. Any information lost or distorted during this coupling is irretrievable.
The realization of a transformer rather than a pre-preamplifier meets the need to avoid additional
distortions, mainly by harmonic 3, specific to electronic sources that can fatigue. On the other hand, the
output level of the moving coil is lower by 20 - 30 dB than a conventional moving magnet. It is for this reason
that the signal delivered is dangerously close to the noise level of pre-preamplifiers (fuzzy distortion), which
masks a part of very low amplitude signals, such as echo, reverb and micro information needed to spatial
localization of sound objects.
This phenomenon does not exist with the processors.
The YBA transformer was developed following the usual concept, namely the creation of extraordinary
uncompromising product. The research was focused on the synthesis of different original technical
principles based on long plays.
Because of its design, the YBA transformer is uniquely suited to meet the different characteristics of moving
coil cartridges. It allows for the finest details of a reading to be highlighted at a very high level.
