Throughput considerations related to highlight color
Highlight color printing introduces a number of new
considerations that have an impact on printer productivity. To
maintain peak printer throughput, you need to make some
decisions concerning the order that color jobs are printed, when
to change the printing mode, and when to change the dry ink
color.
Queue management
In addition to black, only one dry ink color may be loaded at any
given time. Changing to a different color developer housing and
running print quality adjustment (PQA) takes a few minutes and a
large number of such changes in one day could create a
substantial decrease in productivity. The queue management
feature helps you minimize the number of color developer
housing changes. A report enters a queue according to the
attributes within the job. Those attributes may include color and
finishing requirements. The scheduling mode processes the
reports according to the attributes.
If each job name indicates the color required for printing, it
would be possible to use the HIP queue to release only jobs of a
certain color, one by one.
Ink substitution
For jobs that require a color substitution, there is an ink
substitution feature that allows an operator to substitute another
dry ink color in place of the one specified in the job.
The ink substitution feature is useful for processing generic
queues, since the jobs in a generic queue may be printed in
whatever dry ink color is currently loaded. These queues can be
processed without operator intervention by using SUB INK
CURRENT FOR COLOR ALWAYS. This substitution must be
canceled before enabling a queue requiring a specific color.
Ink mismatch
Ink substitution may also be used in the event of an ink
mismatch. An ink mismatch occurs when a report requests the
use of a primary dry ink color not currently loaded. A mismatch
can occur within a report and may be detected after print
processing has started. When a mismatch occurs, the operator
has three options:
•
Substitute the currently loaded dry ink for the dry ink
requested by the job
•
Load the required dry ink housing and run PQA
•
Abort the job.
The decision of whether or not to substitute the currently loaded
dry ink in place of the requested dry ink may be based on
productivity requirements. For example, you could specify that
dry ink be changed to match the job requirement only during
off-peak hours, so that during peak demand hours the currently
loaded dry ink would always be used despite any ink mismatch.
