LPS CONNECTIONS
Network interface
An IBM or IBM-compatible mainframe may be connected to a
4890 through a LAN.
Ethernet LAN
This configuration requires a front end processor, such as Entire
FIBRE 400/600, that converts the Ethernet TCP/IP protocol to an
Ethernet XNS protocol.
Other LAN
If you are using a network interface other than Ethernet, such as
Token Ring, you need a third-party gateway to convert your
network protocol to Ethernet TCP/IP protocol. You then need a
front end processor to convert the TCP/IP protocol into XNS on
Ethernet.
Data streams
In this configuration, application output is generally in PostScript.
PostScript must be converted to a data stream format the printer
understands. The front end processor converts PostScript data
streams to .IMG files. The front end is also needed to convert
TCP/IP to XNS.

Color specification
PostScript masters may contain full color specifications, in which
case full color to highlight color mapping is required. The front
end performs the color mapping automatically when it converts
PostScript data to two-color .IMG files. If colors are specified by
the document creation application, through the use of a facsimile
palette, then the colors print as specified.
If the data stream is line printer or LCDS, then color is
implemented through enhanced PDL or metacode commands.
