6.2 Internet Protocol Security (IPsec)
VPN
Internet Protocol Security (IPsec) is a suite of standards and
protocols for securing Internet Protocol (IP) communications
by authenticating and/or encrypting each IP packet in a data
stream. Also include within IP sec are protocols for cryp-
tographic key establishment. IPsec protocols operate at the
network layer, layer 3 of the OSI model, this means that it can
be used for protecting layer 4 protocols, including both TCP
and UDP, the most commonly used transport layer protocols.
Using strong encryption and public key cryptography IPsec can
secure data links over public networks which would otherwise
be insecure.
IPsec is a framework which is built in to various security
products from companies such as Cisco and Juniper, to pro-
vide end-to-end security. The MRD-3xx unit IPsec functionality
has been tested for interoperability with the Cisco implemen-
tation of IPsec know as Cisco IOS IPsec.
