A Revolution Is Underway
Since we first acquired the gift of imagination, our deepest desire has been to physically inhabit our
fantasies, transcending, if only for a while, the restrictions imposed on us by the real world. This
quest has taken us past many milestones; from the birth of language and the first cave painting to
the printed word and the motion picture. In the past few decades, technology has made it possible
to interact with our creations in the form of videogames. More recently, head-mounted displays
have allowed us to peek inside the virtual world, and feel as though we are finally there - almost.
One barrier has continued to halt that first step into the unknown. How do we escape the physical
confines of our crowded spaces, and move naturally, impulsively, without limits? Attempting to
impel our virtual avatars with our hands has been proven to break immersion and trigger the
nauseating symptoms of simulator sickness. This has led some to question whether true first-
person Virtual Reality (VR) can be had at all without drastic compromises.
