Servicing and Winterization

To   remove   the   M-‐160   from   service,   isolate   the   sprinkler   from   the   mainline   piping   system
through   the   manual   isolation   valve.      Manually   operate   the   electric   remote   control   valve   to
ensure   the   sub-‐lateral   line   is   no   longer   pressurized.

6.1   Winterization

Prior   to   frost   and   the   on-‐set   of   winter,   verify   there   is   no   standing   water   within   the   sprinkler
body   and   internal   components.      A   small   amount   of   water   within   the   piston   drive   will   not
cause   failure   when   freezing   occurs.

During   spring   start-‐up,   if   the   piston   drive   area   is   frozen,   it   will   take   approximately   15-‐20
minutes   to   defrost   when   the   air   temperature   reaches   approximately   68

Maintenance and Repairs

An   unexpected   water   jet   from   an   operating   M-‐160   can   cause   serious   injuries.
Therefore   make   sure   that   before   any   maintenance   or   repair   work   is   started   the
sprinkler   has   been   isolated   from   the   mainline   supply   and   the   sub-‐lateral   line   has
been   de-‐pressurized.

The   M-‐160   sprinkler   is   designed   to   be   serviceable   from   the   top   without   having   to   remove
the   entire   sprinkler   body   from   the   ground.

7.1   Maintenance

1.

Clean   the   interior   of   the   M-‐160   sprinkler   body   with   an   industry   vacuum   or   similar
equipment.

2.

Remove   an   over-‐grown   turf   around   the   perimeter   of   the   top   of   the   sprinkler   when
located   in   natural   turf   applications.

3.

Verify   the   sprinkler   is   vertical   and   perpendicular   with   surrounding   grades.      Adjust
as   needed   if   any   settlement   has   occurred.

When   changing   the   main   nozzle,   the   threads   on   the   nozzle   retainer   and   sprinkler   body
should   be   cleaned   and   applied   with   a   thin   amount   of   lubricant.      This   will   ensure   easy
replacement   or   removal   if   needed.      The   outer   nozzle   retainer   should   be   hand-‐tightened
only.      Verify   the   nozzle   subassembly   is   vertical   and   perpendicular   to   the   top   of   the   sprinkler.

When   installing   a   new   nozzle   make   sure   the   drainage   pipe   on   models
manufacturer   prior   to   2009   is   in   the   proper   nozzle   hole   and   the   O-‐rings
are   seated   properly,   see   Figure   11-‐1.
