Pre-planning for Assembly Instructions
A
UDIENCE
Literate adults (late teens and older) learning English as a second language
P
URPOSE
• Test and learn English through written directions
• Use illustrations and process of assembly to check English
C
ONTEXT
An educational program teaching ESL to young adults and adults purchased the machine
and assembly instructions to give the students a practical way to practice what they had
learned. The “assignment” would help students recognize what they already know of
English and use the process of assembly and the illustrations to help them understand
words they do not know. They would also have an English dictionary available to help
them with their assignment.
Notes from Trial
• The “recipe” at the beginning of each step is helpful (showing what is needed for each
step)
• The little parts could be labelled better in each of the “recipes”
• How tight should the screws be tightened?
• Put the picture of the installed saddle after step 3.1.2.
• Designate number/location of screw holsters for 2.2.
• Show context of saddle for 3.1.1.
• What does “flush” (5.1.3.) mean?
• 5.1.4. needs an illustration.
