CHECK VALVE
Disassembly/assembly
Numbers in parentheses refer to Fig. 4.
Note: Check valve components should be replaced as
a complete assembly when removed from air drier
assembly. Do not reassemble using old components.
1. Using suitable circlip pliers, remove and discard
circlip (12) from check valve assembly.
2. Remove and discard check valve guide (11) and
'O' ring (13).
3. Remove and discard spring (14) and check valve (15).
4. Install new check valve (15) and spring (14) in valve
housing.
5. Grease new 'O' ring (13) and fit to new check valve
guide (11).
6. Lower check valve guide (11) and 'O' ring (13) into
recess, ensuring that the check valve stem locates in
the recess in the centre of the check valve guide (11).
7. Using suitable circlip pliers, install new circlip (12).
SAFETY VALVE
Description
The safety valve protects the air brake system against
excessive air pressure build up. The valve consists of
a spring loaded ball valve subjected to reservoir
pressure which will permit air to exhaust reservoir
pressure to atmosphere if reservoir pressure rises
above the valves' pressure setting. The safety valve is
set to open at a pressure of 11 bar (160 lbf/in²).
Operation
Numbers in parentheses refer to Fig. 4.
When primary tank air pressure under ball (20)
exceeds the maximum valve setting of 10.75 bar
(156 lbf/in²), ball (20) is forced off its seat, permitting
air to escape through exhaust port 'A' to atmosphere.
As soon as sufficient air is bled from the reservoir so
that the pressure drops below the maximum valve
setting, regulating spring (19) forces ball (20) back on
its seat, preventing any further loss of air.
UNLOADER VALVE
Disassembly/assembly
Numbers in parentheses refer to Fig. 4, unless
otherwise specified.
Note: Unloader valve components should be replaced
as a complete assembly when removed from air drier
assembly. Do not reassemble using old components.
1. Pull off and discard protection cap (2) from unloader
valve assembly.
2. Unscrew and discard valve retaining cap (3). Remove
and discard adjusting bush (1) and 'O' ring (7).
3. Remove and discard control spring (8) and control
rod (6).
4. Remove and discard outer bonded valve (9) and
pilot valve piston bush (5).
5. Remove and discard pilot valve piston (10) and
inner bonded valve (4).
Note: Air driers date coded 9401 onwards may have a
filter located at the end of the air passage of delivery
port (2, Fig. 3). Should the filter appear to be blocked
or contaminated, it should be removed (which will
destroy it) and replaced.
The entire body assembly should be cleaned using a
suitable cleaning fluid and thoroughly dried.
6. Install inner bonded valve (4), ensuring that the flat
solid surface is facing outwards.
7. Install pilot valve piston bush (5), ensuring that the
two small holes are facing outwards.
8. Install pilot valve piston (10).
9. Install outer bonded valve (9), ensuring that the flat
solid surface faces inwards and is in contact with pilot
valve piston (10).
10. Install control rod (6) and control spring (8).
11. Install 'O' ring (7) to valve retaining cap (3). Using
special tool which can be fabricated as shown in
Fig. 6, screw in adjusting bush (1) and fit to main body
assembly.
12. If necessary, fit new filter in port 1, use a 7 mm
(0.38 in) dowel to push filter home.
