2. Connect the Type 310A to a power source that meets
the voltage and frequency requirements of the instrument.
3. Turn the SCALE ILLU M control clockwise from the
PWR OFF detent to turn on the instrument. A llow several
minutes warmup so the instrument reaches a normal opera­
ting temperature before proceeding.

4. Advance the INTENSITY control until the trace is at
the desired viewing level (about midrange).
5. Connect the CAL OUT binding post to the vertical
INPUT connector w ith the 18-inch BNC-to-banana plug
patch cord (supplied accessory). For instruments between
SN 10,000 and 20,474 use an 18-inch banana-plug patch
cord.

FIR ST-TIM E OPERATION
General
The follow ing steps demonstrate the use o f the controls
and connectors of the Type 310A. It is recommended that
this procedure be followed completely fo r first time fam il­
iarization w ith this instrument.
6. Adjust the FOCUS control fo r a sharp, well-defined
display over the entire trace length. If focused display can­
not be obtained, see Astigmatism Adjustment in this sec­
tion.
7. Rotate the SCALE ILLU M control throughout its
range and notice that the graticule lines are illuminated as
the control is turned counterclockwise (most obvious w ith
tinted filte r installed). Set the control so the graticule lines
are illuminated as desired.

8. Center the display about the center horizontal line
w ith the V E R TIC A L POSITION control. The display is a
square wave, five divisions in amplitude w ith about five
cycles displayed. If the display is not five divisions in ampli­
tude, see Vertical Gain Adjustm ent in this section.
9. Temporarily disconnect the input signal and position
the trace to the center horizontal line w ith the VE R TIC A L
POSITION control.
10. Reconnect the input signal to the vertical INPUT
connector. Notice that the baseline o f the square wave is
near the center horizontal line.
11. Set the Input Coupling switch to AC. Notice that
the waveform is centered about the center horizontal line
(ground reference).
