The following standard (EN ISO 11611:2015) specifies the performance require-
ments for protective clothing which are made from flexible materials and designed
to protect the body. This protective clothing is intended to protect the wearer against
spatter (small splashes of molten metal), short contact time with flame and radiant
heat from an electric arc when used for welding and allied processes and minimises
the possibility of electrical shock by short-term, accidental contact with live
electrical conductors at voltages up to approximately 100
V d. c. in normal conditions of welding. Sweat, dirt, or
other contaminants can affect the level of protection
provided against short-term accidental contact with live
electric conductors at these voltages. Additional certified
PPE for the head, face, hands and feet which are covered
by other standards should also be worn for comprehensi-
ve protection against all risks which welders are normally
exposed to. Additional partial body protection may need to
be worn for extreme welding, working overhead and angle
grinding.

The following standard (IEC 61482-2:2018) specifies the performance requirements
for protective clothing which are made from flexible materials and designed to protect
the body. This protective clothing fulfils the requirements for protection against the
thermal hazards of an electric arc. When using this clothing pursuant to IEC 61484-2
please note that this protective clothing is NOT electrically insulated protective
clothing, for example in accordance with EN 50286:1999 “Electrical insulating
protective clothing for low-voltage installations”. Additional suitable protective
equipment, such as helmets with visors, protective gloves and shoes (boots), are
required to provide complete personal protection. Items of clothing such as shirts,
underclothes and underwear should not be made of polyamide, polyester or acrylic
fibres as these may melt if subjected to an electric arc.
IEC 61482-2:2018
This standard describes the requirements and testing
procedures (box test) for protective clothing against the
thermal hazards of an electric arc. The suit provides
protection against the hazards of an electric arc, protection
class 1 (4kA/ 0.5 sec). This protection is only afforded when
wearing a complete, closed suit.

The required protective level of the clothing may be determined by using DGUV-I
203-077 (an informative publication by the German Social Accident Insurance
umbrella association, DGUV), for example.
